Word count is essential for writers, editors, students, and content creators who work within length constraints — blog post guidelines, essay limits, social media character caps, or content briefs specifying a target word range.
Words: Any sequence of non-whitespace characters separated by spaces, tabs, or newlines. Numbers, hyphenated words, and contractions each count as one word.
Characters with spaces: The total length of the text including all whitespace. This is the number used by most character-limit fields (Twitter / X, SMS, form inputs).
Characters without spaces: Total length minus all whitespace — useful for counting printable characters in code or for some publishing guidelines that specify character limits excluding spaces.
Reading time: Estimated at 200 words per minute (WPM), the widely cited average adult silent reading speed. Technical or complex texts may take longer; simple narrative text may be read faster.
