Cropping removes the outer edges of an image to focus attention on a specific subject, change the aspect ratio, or remove unwanted background elements. It is one of the most common image editing operations — used for profile photos, product images, social media posts, and document thumbnails.
How it works: After you upload an image, it is rendered on an HTML Canvas element at a scaled-down display size. Your drag selection is tracked in canvas coordinates and converted back to the original pixel dimensions using a scale factor. The crop itself is performed on the original file data (not the preview), so output quality is limited only by the source image.
Aspect ratios: This tool allows free-form selection — crop to any shape. For social media, common ratios are 1:1 (Instagram square), 4:5 (Instagram portrait), 16:9 (YouTube thumbnail), and 2:3 (Pinterest).
